As vets we experience ‘owners’ passing responsibility to the vet much more easily. There is an expectation for the vet to fully decide what is best for the pet. We see a result of this on certain Vet TV shows: On these shows, we see loving owners allowing some ethically debatable procedure to be practiced on their pets. It’s not the owners fault. They only want what is best for their pet, and the vet is often very persuasive: “Because I can do it, then you should let me.” This cult of personality runs the risk of over-riding common sense when it comes to attaching a wheel to a poor dog’s leg.
