Put My Dog to Sleep

Yes this is a most difficult thing to do.

Trying to get enough courage to call our telephone number - it's possibly the worst decision you ever have to make.

It's so much easier when someone you trust - hopefully your vet perhaps - tells you it is time to put your dog to sleep. You can just follow their advice - somehow it is easier.

But if you are on your own, and want to, or have to make the decision yourself, then where do you start.

We have a page where you can go through check lists on quality-of-life. They can help enormously with helping you to make the right decision.

Me? I believe in trusting my own judgement - is there more bad than good, or more good than bad?

It sounds simple, but for the Good and Bad approach to work, you have to trust:

Trust yourself.

Trust your instinct.

Trust your 'gut feelings'.

Trust the people around you.

If every one, and everything is saying 'it's time' but you still haven't dialed our number, then it may be worth thinking about this...

Dogs are Team Players. They believe 100% in you and your decisions. They will do whatever it takes to please you and the rest of your 'pack'. A dog's job is to look after you. I've found many older or ill dogs still can turn on the charm when they need to. They try to look fit and healthy for your sake. They keep it up an hour or so, then crash and sleep for a day. Do you recognise this?

Does your dog have an incurable illness, or is their stiffness, arthritis, skin disease, etc getting worse? Essentially, is their pain, anxiety, mobility, stress going to get worse. If so, is this something you want for them?
